The image at the top of this page is of our wonderful new community centre in waiting.  And for those who need to see more, below you will find the current architect’s plans.  Click on them to see a full size version.

Here’s a very brief description of the parts – but if you want to know more, ask a question in the comments section.

Reception – To welcome you in.
Main Hall – For anything and everything!  A large, extra-height room with as much storage as we can manage to facilitate all sorts of activities.
Cafe – Next to the main hall and reception, facing out to Balmoral Street, with options to open up and pull some tables outside when it’s sunny.
IT suite/drop in space – Flexible spaces with a movable partition, suitable for informal activities for smaller groups, and all the necessary equipment for IT facilities access and/or training.
Childcare – A big part of the building is devoted to childcare, because it’s so important in helping families get involved.  It extends outside to include an outdoor play area.
Conference Room – Another flexible space, suitable for meetings, training and activities.
Offices – The offices are for local community-orientated organisations, who will benefit from being in a community hub.  And the community centre will benefit from the rent they pay to be there.

A lot of effort has gone into making the centre as useful, flexible, and inclusive as possible, but there’s always room for improvement.  If you have questions or ideas, please get in touch – this is everybody’s community centre, and we want to hear from you!

Since the public meeting the committee has already met twice, and we’re happy to say that a few new volunteers have come along to lend us a hand.  Sincere thanks to those who have – it’s brilliant to have new guns in town!

Other exciting news for the new year:  Mhairi Owens has switched from occasional volunteer to full-time staff member for two months thanks to the Vodafone World of Difference fund.  She’s going to be working her socks off with all of us, promoting the project and organising a big event to celebrate the start of the construction process.  Plans are being hatched and we will post more news very soon!

Keep your peepers peeled for an article due in next week’s Clydebank Post, too.  Our intrepid committee ventured out on Monday for a chilly photo call.  Here they are!

They don’t look cold at all!

Our public meeting on Wednesday the 16th December was very positive – if you came along, thanks very much for making the effort to come out on a frosty night, the week before the holidays.

We had a good turn out and everyone there was keen to help out. People were thinking about what kind of things they wanted to see happen in the new centre, and even better, how they could help make that happen.  You never know what assets are out there in your local community – from digging the foundations, to massage and complimentary therapies, there is a wealth of skills and experience that people are willing to share.

The need for the community centre to appeal to people from all parts of the neighbourhood, and all ages, was recognised too.  Suggestions about ways to do this were made by people willing to help make it happen; like using the space around the centre to build a market garden that could grow produce as well as providing a space for younger and older residents to work together, or setting up a cross-generational arts project.

Thanks also to Culture and Sport Glasgow, who helped organise the meeting, and offered their commitment to helping us make the centre a success.

Come along!

We are a group of residents in Scotstoun, Glasgow.  Since 1994 we’ve been campaigning for a community centre that will be a focal point for the social, economic and physical regeneration of our neighbourhood.

This blog will be an information hub for us as we change from a campaign group into a project delivery group – we hope people reading this will find it useful and be inspired to lend a hand.  We’re doing it for ourselves and we need all the help we can get!
